Prevention against RSV disease in children

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in babies under one year old. Every winter, it puts a huge strain on the healthcare system in Belgium.

During 2024, two new preventive drugs will appear on the Belgian market to combat this virus:

  • a vaccine administered during pregnancy, and
  • a new monoclonal antibody administered to the child.

Both are safe and effective. The Superior Health Council therefore recommends their use in pregnant women and infants as soon as they are available. Pending further data, the Superior Health Council leaves the choice of vaccine or antibody to healthcare providers and parents.
