Catheter-related bloodstream infections

Epidemiology and diagnosis of bloodstream infections related to intravascular catheters

Healthcare professionals use intravascular catheters to deliver fluids and medication directly into patients' bloodstreams, and to monitor certain health parameters. However, breaking the skin barrier creates a gateway for microorganisms into the bloodstream, which can lead to serious infections or the development of sepsis. This advisory report offers guidelines for the diagnosis of these infections and provides insight into the Belgian epidemiological situation. This text constitutes the first part of a broader report focusing on the prevention of such catheter-related infections that will appear later.
